Question 648034: Please explain how to solve this word problem:
An investor invests a total of 2100 in two mutual funds. One fund earned 6% profit while the other earned 2% profit. Total profit was 50.00, how much was invested into each mutual find?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = amount of one investment
y = amount of other investment
x + y = 2100
.06x + .02y = 50
solve these equations simultaneously to get your answer.
using substitution, solve for y in the first equation to get:
y = 2100 - x
replace y with 2100-x in the second equation to get:
.06x + .02(2100-x) = 50
simplify to get:
.06x + 42 - .02x = 50
combine like terms and subtract 42 from both sides of the equation to get:
.04x = 8
divide both sides of the equation by .04 to get:
x = 200
this means y is equal to 1900
confirm by substituting these values in the original equations.
x + y becomes 200 + 1900 which equals 2100 (good)
.06x + .02y = 50 becomes .06(200) + .02(1900( which becomes 12 + 38 which equals 50 (also good).
solutions are confirmed to be good.
answers are:
200 is invested at 6%.
1900 is invested at 2%.
