In algebraic terms, the first step is to distribute which means to multiply things out then combine like terms. To distribute or multiply use the FOIL (first, outside, inside, last) method:
(x � 3) (2x � 5) � (x + 1) (x � 6)
=(2x^2-5x-6x+15)-(x^2-6x+x-6)
remove parenthesis then combine like terms
if there is a negative sign in front of the parenthesis, reverse the signs of the terms inside after removing the parenthesis. If there is a positive or no sign in front of the parenthesis, just remove the parenthesis without changing signs of the terms inside.
=2x^2-5x-6x+15-x^2+6x-x+6
combine like terms
=x^2-6x+21
