If Chen gives Elyse $5, they will have the same amount of money. If Elyse gives Chen $5, chen will have three times as much as Elyse has. how many dollars do they have together?
-------------------------
Equations:
C-5 = E+5
3(E-5) = C+5
------
Rearrange:
C - E = 10
C - 3E = -20
------
Substract and solve for "E"
2E = 30
E = 15 dollars
---
Solve for C:
C = E + 10
C = 25 dollars
------------------------
Together they have $40
