Rearrange either of the equations so that you have an equation where one of the variables is equal to an expression involving the other variable. Then make the substitution in the other equation leaving you with a single variable equation that you can solve by ordinary means. Once you have a value for one of the variables in this manner, go back and substitute that value into either of the original equations. Solve for the remaining variable.
