Chuck gets paid $15/hour and lays brick at the rate of 120/hour. Chet earns $10/hour and lays brick at the rate of 50/hour. He works 2 hours less than Chuck. At the end of the day their manager figures they laid approximately 7 bricks/dollar in total. How many hours did Chuck work?
:
Let t = number of hrs Chuck worked
Then (t-2) = number of hrs Chet worked
:
$ paid to Chuck = 15t
$ paid to Chet = 10(t-2)
:
Find out the total $ paid to to both:
15t + 10(t-2)
15t + 10t - 20
(25t - 20) paid to both
:
Find out how many bricks are laid per dollar for each worker
Chuck: 120/15 = 8 bricks/$
Chet: 50/10 = 5 bricks/$
:
Given that the average for the day was 7 bricks/$
:
Find the total bricks: mult total amt paid * brick/$
:
Chucks bricks + Chet's bricks = Total bricks
8(15t) + 5(10(t-2) = 7(25t - 20)
120t + 50t - 100 = 175t - 140
170t - 100 = 175t - 140
170t - 175t = -140 + 100
-5t = -40
t = -40/-5
t = +8 hrs worked by Chuck
:
Check using total bricks:
Total paid to both men: 8*15 + 6*10 = 120 + 60 = $180
:
[8*15*8] + [5*10*6] = 7(180)
960 + 300 = 1260
