Question 54175: Akay How do I set this up when :
p(x) = x^2 -x-5 and r(x) = 2x-1, evaluate (r o p)(6)
The o in the (rop) is a small funny oval shape symbol that I don't understand what it means? Thanks for any help.

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
p(x) = x^2 -x-5 and r(x) = 2x-1, evaluate (r o p)(6)
-------------
The funny thing means you should form the composite function
of r in p(6)
To do this you 1st find P(6)=6^2-6-5=25
Then you evaluate r at 25: r(25)=2(25)-1=49
So (r o p)6 = r[p(6)]=r[25]=49

rop(x) means r composite p of x. It means that you put the p function everywhere there's an x in the r function.

Because you need to find rop(6) substitute 6 in for the x in the composite function.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another way to do it is to find p(6) and then substitute that answer into r(x).

Therefore
Happy Calculating!!!
