distribute the -5 to get 2 - 5x + 15 = 1 + x -8. combine like terms to get -5x + 17 = x - 7. add 5x to both sides to get 17 = 6x -7. now add 7 to both sides to get 24 = 6x. last divide by 6 on both sides to get x =4. it checks!
