Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
4(y+1)=40

or you could
4(y+1)=40
4(y)+4(1)=40 use distributive property
4y+4=40
-4 -4 subtract by 4
4y=36
4y/4=36/4 divide by 4
y=9
