Question 472147: I am trying to divide a polynomial by a monomial.
Divide: x^2 + 3x - 18 by x - 3
First I divided each term of the numerator by x - 3.
x2/(x-3) + 3x/(x-3) - 18/(x-3)
Next I found common factors.
((x*x)/(x-3)) + ((x*3)/(x-3)) - ((6*3)/(x-3))
I divided out the common factors, and ended up with:
x/-3 + (-1) - 6/x
Is this correct?
Would you please show me step by step, exactly how this problem should work out if this is not correct?

I am trying to divide a polynomial by a monomial.
Divide: x^2 + 3x - 18 by x - 3
-----------------
(x^2+3x-18)/(x-3)
----
Factor where you can:
= [(x+6)(x-3)]/(x-3)
---
= Cancel the common factor (x-3) to get:
---
= x+6
