Question 425444: the sum of 2 numbers is 48. if the larger number is 6 less than twice the smaller number, find the numbers.
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=the smaller number
And let 48-x=the larger number
Six less than twice the smaller number=2x-6
So our equation to solve is:
48-x=2x-6 add x and also 6 to each side
48+6-x+x=2x+x-6+6 collect like terms
54=3x
x=18------------smaller number
48-x=48-18=30--------larger number
CK
30+18=48
48=48
and
30=2*18-6
30=30
Hope this helps--ptaylor
