Question 405454: please help me solve this problem : a boat takes 45 minutes to get 6 miles downstream and 1 hour to get back. find the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the current.
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed of boat in still water = x mph
speed of current = y mph
..
speed upstream = x-y
speed downstream = x+y
...
time upstream = 1 hour
time downstream = 3/4 hours
..
distance = 6 miles
time= distance /speed
6/x-y= 1
x-y=6......1
...
6/x+y = 3/4
4*6= 3(x+y)
24 = 3(x+y)
/3
8=x+y......2
add (1)&(2)
2x=14
x=14/2
x= 7 mph ===> speed of boat
..
x-y =6
7-y=6
y=1 mph speed of current
