the equation 3x^2 + 2x + 2 = 0; won't factor, it doesn't even have any real roots

If you look at the discriminant b^2 - 4*a*c
2^2 - 4*3*2 =
4 - 24 = -24, any equation with a negative value has no real roots

The roots are by the quadratic formula. These roots are not real, so the polynomial doesn't factor over the reals. It does factor if you use complex numbers:
