I've tried:
6y+3x=-15
2y+x=5
3(2y+x)=5
6y+3x=-15
6y+3x=15
0=15
but my y and x expressions will cancel out and i'm left with no solution

Instead of 6y+3x=-15, 3x-15=-6y becomes 6y+3x=15. So, these 2 equations are saying the same thing (this is the first equation times 3), and therefore the solution is all real numbers.
