There are two terms in the RHS, namely and . Each of these terms consists of factors.

To have something in common means that two or more things share a characteristic. So a common factor is a factor that is shared by two or more terms. In this case, we are looking at the factor . Both terms also share the factor , but a factor of doesn't change anything, so we can ignore it. Notice the factors and in the second term are NOT shared by the first term. Hence the only significant factor, and therefore the greatest factor that both terms have in common is .
