There are 6 times 6 = 36 one unit by one unit squares

There are 5 times 5 = 25 two unit by two unit squares

There are 4 times 4 = 16 three unit by three unit squares

There are 3 times 3 = 9 four unit by four unit squares

There are 2 times 2 = 4 five unit by five unit squares

There is 1 times 1 = 1 six unit by six unit square.

You can either add those up or use the sum of squares formula:

The arithmetic is yours to do.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
