Question 300401: suppose you are trying to solve a system of linear equations using substitution and get this result. How many solutions does the system have?
x = -2
y = 12
6 = x
-8 = -8
7 = y
5 = 3
How do you solve these
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Lines that cross have one solution.
Lines that don't cross have no solutions
Lines that are equivalent have an infinite number of solutions.
Since there are two solutions they must be equivalent.
Therefore -2,12 and 6,7 are solutions and points on the line.
to get the slope we y-y/x-x=m
12-7/-2-6=5/-8=-5/8
y=-5x/8+b
7=-5*6/8+b
7=-30/8+b
56/8+30/8=b
86/8=b
43/4=b
y=-5x/8+43/4
8y=-5x+86
check other point
8*12=-5*-2+86
96=10+86
96=96
There are an infintie number of solutions
