Question 286550: I have a train that travels for 1 hour when it has trouble and continues on the rest of the trip at 60% of its avg speed up to the point it had trouble.
It arrives at its destination 2 hours late.
The other clue I have is that if the train had gone 50 miles beyond the point it had trouble and resumed the trip at 60% its average speed up to that point, it would have been late by only 80 minutes.
I cannot figure out how to solve this but have tried d=rt and substitutions of all kinds.

First of all this is a word problem about travel and distance and should be in that category. How did you look for lessons and examples in the wrong category?
You talked about hints/clues in the problem.
Just give us the problem and we will decide what is a clue or a diversion.
You also have not said what you want to solve for.
The original train speed, the distance before the trouble, etc.
It makes a lot of difference on how the problem is set up.
