Question 26231: i started an online math class. it has been sometime since i have done this math. it is a word problem.
a bus leaves the station at 1pm. traveling west at an average rate of 44mph. one hour later a second bus leaves the same station, traveling east at a rate of 48mph. at what time will the two buses be 274 miles apart..
i am not sure how to start this equation:44x+1=274, 48y-1=274

Let the time be x
now the first bus is 44(x+1) because its 1 hour later. later means +
Now the second bus is 48 TIMES the original time.

44(x+1)+48x=274
44x+44+48x=274
92x=230
x=2.5
Hence, after 2.5h the two busses will be 274 miles apart.
