For additional help with equation solving, see my Lesson Plan in algebra.com for Equation Solving.
9(2x+8)=20-(x+5)
18x + 72 = 20 - x - 5
18x + 72 = 15 - x
Add +x to each side:
18x + 72 + x = 15 -x + x
19x + 72 = 15
Subtract 72 from each side:
19x + 72 - 72 = 15 - 72
19x = - 57
Divide both sides by 19, and believe it or not, IT COMES OUT NICELY!!
After this good fortune, how about checking it?
9(2x+8)=20-(x+5)
9(-6+8)= 20 -(-3+5)
9(2) = 20 - 2
18=18
It checks!!
