Assuming that it is a rectangle,
let W= width and L=length
2L+2W=56 ft
L=W+8
substitute
2(W+8)+2W=56
2W+8+2W=56
subtract 8 from both sides and combine
4W=48
divide both sides by 4
W=12
L=W+8=12+8=20
