If the problem said: "Find a number 'x' which is 150 greater than its opposite.", then it might have been more obvious. Anyways, they're not referring to the opposite of 150, they're referring to the opposite of the unknown number "x". For ANY number "x", the opposite is "-x" (ie negative 'x')

The given sentence "a number which is 150 greater than its opposite" translates to

Start with the given equation.

Add 'x' to both sides.

Cancel out the opposite (but common) terms.

Combine like terms.

Simplify

Divide both sides by 2 to isolate "x".
