New York City and Washington D.C. are about 240 miles apart. A car leaves NYC at noon traveling directly south toward Washington, D.C. at 55 miles per hour. At the same time and along the same route, a second car leaves Washington, D.C. bound for NYC traveling directly north at 45 miles per hour. Answer by dukesmart(20) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let put x the distance the driver from NYC drive to have lunch at 12:24pm
Let put y the distance the driver from Wash.DC drive to have lunch at 12:24pm
we have the equation as follows:
x/55 = y/45 ...... (1)
then we have x+y = 240 .........(2)
From (1) we have x=55y/45 and 55y/45 + y =240
or 55y+ 45y = 240*45=10,800
then 100y = 10,800
y= 108 miles
===========> x=240-108=132 x=132 miles
