The idea is to isolate the unknown (in this case, 'u') you're interested in to one side of the equal sign -- doesn't matter which side you isolate to.
.
5u-w=u+4w
Subtract u from both sides:
5u-w-u = u+4w-u
simplifying:
4u-w = 4w
Add w to both sides:
4u-w+w = 4w+w
simplifying:
4u = 5w
finally, divide both sides by 4:
4u/4 = 5w/4
simplifying:
u = (5/4)w
or
u = 1.25w
