9w + 5 = 12w -4
3w = 9
w = 3

the right side of the equation must be distributed the distribution rule for addition is as follows a(b+c)=ab+ac
so take 9w+5=4(3w-1) which equals 9w+5=12w-4....> now you need to subtract 9w from each side to get all the w's on one side 5=3w-4--->now add 4 to both sides to get constant terms all on one side this is your answer.
now putting this answer back into the equation we get
9(3)+5=4(3(3)-1)
27+5=4(8)
32=32---check

if w is 3 then you multiply whatever the w is being multipied too.
9*3+5=4 (3*3-1)
