Question 162204: A taxicab company charges $2.10 for the first mile plus $0.80 per mile after the first mile. Carmen pays $11.70 total. What is the number of miles Carmen traveled? Please show me how to set up the equation! Thanks!
Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2.10+.80x=11.70
.80x=11.70-2.10
.80x=9.6
x=9.6/.8
x=12 miles @ $80 + the first mile for $2.10 is a total of 12+1=13 miles for the total distance traveled.
