Sometimes you need to rewrite an equation so that a variable is on only one side of the equation. To accomplish this, add the opposite of the term to both sides of the equation. Then add, subtract, multiply, or divide in order to isolate the variable.
3x-5=x-7

3x-x=-7+5
2x=-2

x=-1 answer.
Proof:
3*-1-5=-1-7
