: Can you help me solve this variables with equations.
On my worksheet it says "Sometimes you need to rewrite an equation so that a variable is only on one side of the equation. To accomplish this, add the opposite of the term to both sides of the equation. Then add, subtract, multiply, or divide in order to isolate the variable."
It gave a few examples, but I can't seem to get the same format they are computing.
So this is the problem.
2x-1=4x+3 I got a -2 but I'm not so sure if its the correct answer. Please help me with this problem!! Thank you :) This question is from textbook beginning algebra

Replace "x" by -2. If you get a true statement x=-2 is the correct answer.

2x - 1 = 4x + 3

Let's subtract 4x + 3 from both sides...
2x - 1 - (4x + 3) = 4x + 3 - (4x + 3)

Remember to distribute your negatives!
2x - 1 - 4x - 3 = 0

Combine like terms...
(2x - 4x) -1 - 3 = 0
-2x - 4 = 0
Add 4 to both sides

-2x - 4 + 4 = 0 + 4
-2x = 4
Divide both sides by -2
x = 4/-2
x = -2

Therefore, you did it correctly...congratulations :)
