Presuming that both boys passed the same lemonade stand, since 12 minutes is hour, Paul will be 1 mile ahead of John when John passes the stand. John is travelling 2 miles per hour faster than Paul, so the question becomes how long would it take to go 1 mile at 2 miles per hour. 1 mile/2 mph = hour, or 30 minutes. 12:12 PM plus 30 minutes is 12:42. Paul is already 1 mile past the stand and still travelling 5 mph, so 30 minutes later he will have travelled an additional . Hence John will catch Paul 3.5 miles past the lemonade stand.
