For this type of problem, you should have an equation that looks somewhat like this.



n= the amount saved

Look at it this way.

The shirt was originally priced at $60 (really expensive >.>), right? The $60 was the full price, or 100% of the price. Since Gap is having a 40% off sale. You want to find 40% of the original price ($60). Make sense? (I hope so :D)

Now we cross multiply, and since we don't want to multiply n with anything. You multiply the 2 number that are diagonal from each other. In this case, it's going to be .
But you can't really save $2400 on a $60 shirt...can you? So now we divide by the remaining number. (100)

And there's your answer!

If you want to check, all you have to do is substitue n for any other number, and work it out like you just did, if the number comes out to be the same as the original, then you got the right answer!
