Is there an easy way to do this?Please help me understand.I think the first part of the answer is 5, but the second part ,I'm not sure on how to do it.But I think its -2. Can you show me the steps please. Thank you.
-x -2y = -1
3x + 2y = 11

Given
-x - 2y = -1 ------(1)
3x + 2y = 11 ------(2)
To find the values of 'x' and 'y' for the given equation first we add this two equation then we get 'x' value because of 'y' term get cancelled.
i.e.,(1)+(2), we get
2x=10 implies that x=10/2,
Therefore, x=5

Next we find the value of 'y' for getting this we now cancel the x term.
For this, (1)*3+(2)
i.e., -3x-6y=-3
3x+2y=11
Now we adding these two equations the x term will be cancelled.
We get,

-4y=8
implies that y=8/-4,
Therefore y=-2

Hence the values of x and y are
x= 5 and y=-2
