All you have to do is to substitute y from the first equation into the second equation:

y= x-4
y= -3x - 6 so instead of y we can write x-4=-3x-6 so we put the x on the same side, changing the sign, x+3x=4-6, so we have 4x=-2 so x=-2/4 so x= -1/2
Now in one of the equations, replace x with the value -1/2 and find y.
y=-1/2-4 so in y=x-4, y=(-1-8)/2=-9/2, so y=-9/2.
