-1 x + 3 y = 2


1 x + -5 y = -4
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 5
Multiply (2) by 3
-5 x 15 y = 10
3 x -15 y = -12
Add the two equations
-2 x = -2
/ -2
x = 1
plug value of x in (1)
-1 x + 3 y = 2
-1 + 3 y = 2
3 y = 3
y = 1
Ans x = 1
y = 1

It'd be NICE if this person could be BANNED from this forum.
What he/she did to this problem was TOTALLY and UNEQUIVOCALLY silly, UNNECESSARY and outright STUPID.
- x + 3y = 2 ------ eq (i)
x - 5y = - 4 ---- eq (ii)
From the onset ALL ONE NEEDS to DO is ADD the 2 equations to get: - 2y = - 2 ===>
Then, substitute 1 for y in eq (ii) to get a value of 1 for x, also.
