Velocities (rates of traveling) x and 3x miles per hour.


Equation


    5*(3x) - 5*x = 80  miles


Simplify and solve

    
    15x - 5x     = 80

    10x          = 80

      x          = 80/10 = 8.


ANSWER.  8 mph and 24 mph.
