Question 1154946: Everything costs either $1.50 or $3.50 at a garage sale, there were 150 items and 41 items are left and $227.50 was made from the sale of items - write a system of equations that you could solve to figure out how many of each type of item sold.
would this be correct? x + y = 109
(3.5)x + 227.50 = (1.5)y
thank you

Everything costs either $1.50 or $3.50 at a garage sale, there were 150 items and 41 items are left and $227.50 was made from the sale of items - write a system of equations that you could solve to figure out how many of each type of item sold.
x + y = 109
(3.5)x + (1.5)y =227.50

x + y = 109.00

3.50 x + 1.50 y = 227.50 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by -1.50
Multiply (2) by 1.00
-1.50 x -1.50 y = -163.50
3.50 x 1.50 y = 227.50
Add the two equations
2.00 x = 64.00
/ 2.00
x = 32.00
plug value of x in (1)
1.00 x + 1.00 y = 109
32.00 + 1.00 y = 109
1.00 y = 77
y = 77
Ans x = 32
y = 77
