First step, subtract 9 from both sides. You will get


7x + 9 - 9 - 2x = -1 -9


Next step, combine like terms in each side.   You will get


5x = - 10.


Final step, divide both sides by 5.  You will get


x =  = -2.


ANSWER.  x= -2.
