Answer by addingup(3677)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + y = 35 subtract x from both sides: y = 35 - x
108x + 340y = 8,188 in this equation substitute for y:
108x + 340(35 - x) = 8,188
108x + 11,900 - 340x = 8,188
-232x = -3,712 divide both sides by -232, and remember -/- = +
x = 16
Howard bought 16 boxes of wrenches and 35-16 = 19 boxes of hammers

Check:
16(108) + 19(340) = 8,188 Correct
