Question 10917: HOW CAN I FIND THE VALUE OF A VARIABLE. THIS PROBLEM IS IN MY GEOMTRY TEXTBOOK .I TAKE GEOMTRY BUT IT ALSO INCLUDES ALGEBRA?
I HAVE A LINE SEGMENT AND P IS THE MID POINT. FOR ONE HALF THEIRS AN EXPRESSION WHICH IS 4X+3 AND ON THE OTHER HALF IS 8X-11. SO I NEED TO FIND THE VALUE.?
Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If it's the midpoint, then the distance from one end to the midpoint equals the distance from the other end to the midpoint.
4x+3 = 8x - 11
Subtract 4x from each side to get the variables on the right side:
4x - 4x + 3 = 8x - 4x - 11
3 = 4x - 11
Next, add 11 to each side to get the number terms to the opposite side:
3 + 11 = 4x
14 = 4x
Divide both sides by 4:
x= 14/4 which reduces to 7/2 or 3.5.
That should be your final answer.
