An easy way to do this would be to multiply everything by 10
10(5.4y+8.2=9.8y-2.8)
This would get you 54y%2B82=98y-28
A good thing to do would be to get the variables and the numerals separate.
You could add 28 to each side canceling out the 28 on the right side.
54y%2B82%2B28=98y
Then, you could subtract 54y from both sides canceling out the 54y on the left side.
82%2B28=98y-54y
Simplify:
110+=+44y
You could divide each side by 11:
10+=+4y
You could then divide each side by 4 to get the variable by itself:
This would mean:y = 2.5 OR 5/2
