Let x=height of Washington Monument: (x-58)----58 ft shorter
Then x+497=height of Eiffel Tower: ((x+497)-58)---------58 ft shorter
Now we are told that:
((x+497)-58)=2(x-58) get rid of parens
x+497-58=2x-116 simplify
x+439=2x-116 add 116 to and subtract x from both sides
x-x+439+116=2x-x-116-116 collect like terms
555=x or
x=555 ft--------------------------height of Washington Monument
x+497=555+497=1052 ft---------- height of Eiffel Tower

1052-58=2*(555-58)
994=2*497
994=994
