Question 1006040: During the Student Government Association elections, one candidate received 38 more votes for Senator than the other candidate. If the total number of votes cast for the two candidates was 164 how many votes did each candidate get?
Answer by fractalier(6550)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Call their vote totals x and y. From the facts we have
x = y + 38 and
x + y = 164
Substitute the first into the second and get
y + 38 + y = 164
2y + 38 = 164
Subtract 38 and divide by two and get
2y = 126
y = 63 votes so that
x = 101 votes
