It's because e0 = 1

The exponential equation is 

y = a·ex

The y-intercept is found by substituting 0 for x and
solving for y

y = a·e0

Since any number to the 0 power (with only one exception) is 1,
we get:

y = a·(1)

y = a

So a is the y-coordinate of the y-intercept.
