Question 762294: Let U = {x│x is an American}
C = {x│x is a smoker}
D = {x│x has a health problem}
E = {x│x is a male}
Describe in words a member of each of the following:
(a) ¯C¯
(b) ¯C¯ ∩ ¯D¯
(c) C ∩ D
(d) D - C
(e) D U C
NOTE: U denotes “union” , ∩ denotes “intersection” and ¯ ¯ denotes “negation”,
for example, ¯ C¯ = is not a smoker

Something like this may be easy to see if you have a small set of people. If not, then I recommend you practice this some more until it becomes easier to spot.

(a) ¯C¯ = set of all non-smoking Americans

(b) ¯C¯ ∩ ¯D¯ = set of all non-smoking Americans who don't have health problems

(c) C ∩ D = set of all Americans who smoke and have health problems

(d) D - C = set of all Americans who have health problems BUT do NOT smoke

(e) D U C = set of all Americans who have health problems or they smoke (or both)

Note: for some reason set E is never used at all.

Think of " ∩ " as having a horizontal line drawn throught it
like this: " ", making it look like the letter " A "
for the word " AND ". It would be good if we could make the " U "
look like an " O " for the word " OR __(OR BOTH) ", but I can't
figure out how to do that. But just remember that
" ∩ " means " AND ",
" U " means " OR __(OR BOTH) ",
" ¯ ¯ " means " NOT ",
" - " means " BUT NOT ".

 (a) ¯C¯ = An American who is NOT a smoker
 (b) ¯C¯ ∩ ¯D¯ = An American who is NOT a smoker BUT NOT having a health problem
 (c) C ∩ D     = An American who is a smoker AND has a health problem
 (d) D - C     = An American who has a health problem BUT NOT a smoker
 (e) D U C = An American who has a health problem OR is a smoker (OR BOTH)
