Question 7260: I am tutoring myself over the summer to go into Algebra. i am on the chapter exponents. i understand exponents and bases but i dont understand this: (xy to the 2nd power)to the 3rd power = xy � y � xy � y � xy � y = x to the 3rd power times y to the sixth power.
Why is y broken up and why does it suggest this rule: Raise each factor to the power and then use the rule of exponents for multiplication?

Your conclusion is wrong unless there is some other restriction, like y = 1.
