Question 7260: I am tutoring myself over the summer to go into Algebra. i am on the chapter exponents. i understand exponents and bases but i dont understand this: (xy to the 2nd power)to the 3rd power = xy · y · xy · y · xy · y = x to the 3rd power times y to the sixth power.
Why is y broken up and why does it suggest this rule: Raise each factor to the power and then use the rule of exponents for multiplication?

Something must be wrong in your question.
Your conclusion is wrong unless there is some other restriction, like y = 1.
