Answer by bucky(2189)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Convert these back to actual numbers, one at a time:
5.01*10^-3
The negative sign on the exponent tells you to move the decimal point to the left. The exponent
"3" tells you to move the decimal 3 places. So moving the decimal point 3 places to the
left results in the number 0.00501
.
4.8*10^-1
Because the exponent of 10 in -1 you know to move the decimal point 1 place to the left.
Therefore this number is 0.48
.
0.52*10^-3
The exponent of 10 tells you to move the decimal point 3 places to the left. When you
do you get the number 0.00052.
.
56*10^-2
The exponent of 10 tells you to move the decimal two places to the left. Although
you don't see the decimal point, the number is 56.0 and moving the decimal point to the
left results in 0.56
.
Now you can arrange this list from least to greatest. When you do the result is:
.
0.00052
0.00501
0.48
0.56
.
The corresponding arrangement of the original numbers given in the problem are:
.
0.52*10^-3
5.01*10^-3
4.8*10^-1
56*10^-2
.
Hope this helps you to understand this type of notation and how to go back and forth
between actual numbers and the number system that uses powers of 10.
