Use the FOIL(first outer inner last) method:
(2/3x + 8) (1/2x - 1)
First: 2/3x times 1/2x = 1/3x^2
Outer: 2/3x times -1 = -2/3x
Inner: 8 times 1/2x = 4x
Last: 8 times -1 = -8
Combine: 1/3x^2 - 2/3x + 4x - 8
Like terms: 1/3x^2 + 10/3 x - 8 <-- ANSWER
