Question 673346: I have tried to solve the following problem but can't get
anyone to agree with me. Are my processes correct and why?
126 divided by 2y to the third--where y=3.
126 divided by 2 x (3 x 3 x 3)=
126 divided by 2 x 27
126 divided by 54= 2.3
Everyone else is saying that the problem should read:
126 divided by 2 x y to the third.
(126 divided by 2) x (3 x 3 x3)

It depends on where the variable is located. If it's in the denominator, as follows: , then you're correct.

However, if it's in the numerator, as follows: , then they're correct.

You need to determine where it's located, and you'll have the correct answer.
