Start with distribution
2(x+8) is the same as (2)(x)+(2)(8) = 2x+16
5(x-1) is the same as (5)(x)+(5)(-1) = 5x-5
2x+16 + 5x-5 = 60
..
Group like variables
2x + 5x + 16 - 5
7x + 11 = 60
..
Subtract 11 from both sides to isolate x
7x +11 - 11 = 60 - 11
7x = 49
..
Divide both sides by 7 to further isolate x

x = 7
...
Check your answer
2(7+8) + 5(7-1)
2(15) + 5(6)
30 + 30 = 60 Correct!!
