(-p)(-p^2) really means:
(-1*p)(-1*p^2)
The above can be written as:
(-1)(p)(-1)(p^2)
And then rewritten as:
(-1)(-1)(p)(p^2)


(-1)(-1) = 1 so,
(-p)(-p^2) =
p^3
