SOLUTION: This is more of a proceedural question. My daughters teacher has taught them that -3^2=-9 while -(3^2)=9 And it states in the text on page 83 section 17.B this is the case.

My daughters teacher has taught them that -3^2=-9 while -(3^2)=9
And it states in the text on page 83 section 17.B this is the case.
I have been always taught that two negatives equal a positive.
Is this "new" math? Or am I mis-remembering

You may have typed in the problem wrong, but:
= -9 This is correct.
= -9 ...not 9 as you show it.
Perhaps you meant to write:
= 9
