Question 421166: can you help me solve this summation of Exponents.
I know that in case of multiplication you subtract the exponant. And in the case of division you add up the exponants, My question is what do you do in the case of summation or subtraction
Example (1) 5^3+5^2 = ?
Example (2) 5^3- 5^2= ?
thank you

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I know that in case of multiplication you subtract the exponant.
No, you add the exponents.
x^2*x^3 = x^5
------------------------
And in the case of division you add up the exponants,
No, you subtract the exponents.
x^5/x^2 = x^(5-2) = x^3
------------------------
My question is what do you do in the case of summation or subtraction
Example (1) 5^3+5^2 = ?
You factor:
= 5^2(5+1) = 5^2*6 = 6*25 = 150
-----------------------------------
Example (2) 5^3- 5^2= ?
You factor:
= 5^2(5-1) = 5^2*4 = 100
